Drug Rehab Chronicles – The Internet – One More Enemy in the War on Drugs

People suffering from chronic pain sometimes need prescriptions for opiate painkillers. Unfortunately, some of those people are turning to the Internet instead of consulting their personal physician regarding what drugs to take, how much of them and for how long. As a result, some are abusing the drugs, and are becoming addicted. Instead of solving their pain problem, they now have a new one – finding a drug rehab program.

Things have definitely changed over the years. In the past, when a prescription ran out you went to your doctor for a refill. When he thought it was appropriate Border collies for adoption , he took you off the drugs. Nowadays, with so many prescriptions being written for opiate painkillers – which are highly addictive – when the doc says no, the patient is in trouble. Unfortunately, instead of heading for drug rehab, he goes in search of other sources for the drug.

Many resort to “doctor shopping” – going from one doc to another, sometimes faking symptoms – to get the drugs. And now we have the Internet. You don’t need a doctor, you just fill out a little online questionnaire and you’ve got your drugs. There are hundreds of these Internet sites, called “rogue pharmacies,” and the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) reported that a mere 34 of them dispensed nearly 100 million dosages of hydrocodone drugs last year – sufficient to give over 400,000 patients a one-month supply.

The DEA says about 95% of the drugs sold by “rogue pharmacies” are controlled substances. Compare this to the 11% dispensed by legitimate pharmacies and it is clear that prescription drug abuse is a problem. It is also clear that someone is going to have to do something about the number of drug rehab facilities available if we’re going to handle it.

The websites find doctors who are retired or whose debt exceeds their ability to pay. If the doctor is seeking extra income, he can sometimes be persuaded to write prescriptions after looking over customers’ online questionnaires. The doctor is then paid for each prescription he writes. Then, the site approaches smaller pharmacies and persuades them to fill and ship the prescription to the customer. For a pharmacy that is struggling financially, the additional fee received on top of the cost of the medication can be enough to help make ends meet. These pharmacies keep the drug addiction alive, and the addict out of drug rehab.

Typically, legitimate pharmacies require a doctor-patient relationship in order to fill the prescription. Although Congress is looking at implementing legislation that would clarify laws regarding Internet pharmacy sales, rogue pharmacies are currently able to operate within the law.

It would not be wrong if we say that today one thing that has taken the status of a superstar is nothing but money. Everywhere nothing matters as much as money. If one has money the whole world is at one’s grip. Even when one is ill, the first thing one need to have is money in his pocket. The hospitals, medicines, and treatment are becoming costlier and costlier day by day. The private concerns of health care are beyond the financial powers of many people. It also happens many a times that people are not able to save their near and dear ones in the face of illnesses if they are short of money. In this age of globalization everyone’s main concern is to earn money. Hence ideals have gone out to give space to money. Today baring a few, no one is that much concerned about morals and ethics. Especially in case of health care, people go to any extent to save their loved ones and they also pay for the treatment no matter how exorbitant the rate is. That is the reason why today hospitals are flourishing like never before. In the third world countries like India, government hospitals, keeping apart a few, are below average. Most of the government hospitals that are good don’t have adequate seats to accommodate the huge number of people seeking to get in for treatment. Many of them die even before getting into the hospital. Thus people naturally opt for the private concerns and the latter reap the maximum benefits.

Not just treatments in the private concerns, but sometimes some typical medicines can also cost a fortune. For example medicines related to the disastrous disease called erectile dysfunction are available at an exorbitant rate. Erectile dysfunction in itself is a disease that wrecks havoc in the lives of the ones who are affected. Not just the ones who are directly affected, but also their partners.

Erectile dysfunction is an ailment that takes into its fold 80% of the men at some point of their lives. There is probably no such man who is not scared of the word ED. Erectile dysfunction apart from affecting the patient physically also ruins his self respect, confidence, and self esteem. Hence the news of the invention of ED drugs was welcomed by one and all. However the whole excitement was dampened and came down with a thump when the people came to know of the out of the world prices of the ED drugs. For example an ED drug like Viagra is quite out of the financial reach of the common man. With the invention of another very famous and phenomenal ED drug Cialis, Viagra got some kind of competition. Firstly Cialis was cheaper than Viagra and secondly Cialis’ effect lasted longer than that of Viagra. But the worries did not end here for the middle class and the poor as they cannot buy cialis [http://www.buy-cialis-online-now.com] because Cialis is only comparatively cheaper than Viagra. It’s still quite out of reach for a huge chunk of people.

So there’s a certain irony involved here because erectile dysfunction is not just the privilege of the rich but ED drugs are. The boon of ED drugs is accessible to the affluent class only while the demon of ED still continues to haunt the poor. So it’s really a question worth a million dollars that shouldn’t ED drugs be made available to the poor? There are drugs of diseases that are available free of cost by the government in the government hospitals. Erectile dysfunction is also a disease and a wide spread disease at that. It’s true that people don’t talk about it openly and it’s not contagious but it’s a disease nevertheless. In an era where the rich can easily buy cialis online [http://www.buy-cialis-online-now.com] via internet the poor are still shying away and ignoring ED. Governments should at least take an initiative in this respect especially in the third world countries.
